"5-Hydroxytryptophan (5-HTP), also known as oxitriptan, is a naturally occurring amino acid and chemical precursor as well as a metabolic intermediate in the biosynthesis of the neurotransmitter serotonin. 5-HTP is sold over the counter in the United States, Canada, the Netherlands, and the United Kingdom as a dietary supplement for use as an antidepressant, appetite suppressant, and sleep aid. It is also marketed in many European countries for the indication of major depression under the trade names Cincofarm, Levothym, Levotonine, Oxyfan, Telesol, Tript-OH, and Triptum."

Precautions
Avoid using with SSRI medications, the combination of which can cause a potentially-fatal condition known as 'serotonin syndrome'.
Acute administration of 5-HTP can increase serotonin at a rate that causes side effects such as heart palpitations, anxiety, and restlessness.
Taking 5-HTP for prolonged periods may lead a reduction of other neurotransmitters, as shared cofactors are overutilized for serotonin.
Important Notes
Due to the short half-life of 5HTP, time-release formulations may offer greater therapeutic benefit for those with symptoms that persist throughout the day.
